Description
‘In our darkest hour, when humanity laments its own fragility,
Only music cuts through the madness, eases the pain, and brings back hope’
(text by Gordon Tayler)
This unaccompanied flute solo was composed shortly after the 2001 9/11 Twin Towers tragedy in the USA, when the whole world seemed to be in a state of shock and grief. We all seemed to miss a few heart beats, as we surrendered our innocence to a harsh and threatening reality.
The flute player has nowhere to hide in an unaccompanied solo. Therefore quality of tone is crucial. To achieve the best possible sound on whatever brand of flute you may have is mostly about breath support. Practice long tones and listen to how the sound changes with variations in lip shape, chin position, diaphragm support, relaxation of throat muscles.
This piece will challenge your sense of rubato phrasing (freedom in the time), breath and vibrato control, chromatic fingering in the top register, and much more. Good luck!
