Description
Flute ensemble work is mostly about each player learning to listen very carefully as they play, to facilitate improvement in intonation, rhythmical togetherness and perhaps most importantly, dynamic and tonal balance between the parts.
This work for flute quartet and piano is a journey to the top of a mountain peak. The modulations and key changes attempt to capture the changing visual terrain as one climbs upward, as well as our changing emotions from energised excitement to joy and fulfilment at reaching the summit, and then the happy, peaceful and weary descent at the end of the day.
Feel the story as you play. Pay close attention to the dynamics to create the emotion within the story. Shape the modulations with good control of tempo changes (eg bars 42-45). Applying dynamics and shaping phrases well within ensemble playing is no easy task – each player must listen intently to the overall sound, always seeking a balance between the various harmonic parts, while still allowing the main melody to take some precedence.
The downloadable zip files for all these flute quartets with piano accompaniment, contain a pdf master score for the 4 flutes and the piano part, individual pdf extracts for each of the 4 flutes, an mp3 audio of the master score, as well as an mp3 flute quartet backing track with only the piano accompaniment to assist practice.
