Farewell

Description

This flute solo with piano accompaniment is about lost love – the fond memories of warmth and togetherness when everything was going well, but also the upheaval, sadness and melancholy of breaking up, deciding to part ways and face the world as individuals again, with a mixture of resilient expectation and regretful hesitancy about what the future will bring.

Even though the key is G major, the music mainly dwells in a Dorian mode to give a less earthed tonal centre as one deals with the feelings of emptiness and failure. But at bar 23, the key shifts fully into G major as an expression of our human resilience and capacity to cope with loss, and move on with hopefulness and courage.
