Description
Play this elementary piano solo in D minor with mystery and suspense, as though telling a story. Gradually increase the tension as you approach bar 11 – a moment of fear and uncertainty followed by a silent pause, as though some unexpected misfortune is about to befall. But in the next bar, we catch our breath, relax a little, and carry on with our journey through the dark night. As we return home the music rises to a forte – we are excited and relieved at the same time, running the final short distance – push the tempo a little here if you wish. At the very end the soft (pp) D major chord is heard as we slip back into our safe warm bed (an example of ‘Tierce de Picardie’ where a piece in a minor key ends with a major chord). Don’t allow the chords (even when in the RH) to overshadow the distinctive minor melodies – notice the swap over at bars 3 & 15.
