This piano solo is a journey to the top of a mountain peak. The modulations and key changes attempt to capture the changing visual terrain as one climbs upward, as well as our changing emotions from energised excitement to joy and fulfilment at reaching the summit, and then the happy, peaceful and weary descent at the end of the day. Tell the story in your thinking as you play.
This is a ternary form piece (ABA + short coda) – Section A (bars 1-20) is largely chordal in effect, whereas Section B (bars 21-60) is based on a melodically strong vocal melody which needs a singing RH and a softer LH accompaniment. Sustaining the LH broken chords with both foot and finger pedalling helps to stabilise each LH chord position. Pay close attention to the dynamics to create the emotion within the story. Shape the modulations with good control of tempo changes (eg bars 42-45).
