Out of the Blue

Description

This flute solo is a laid back swing / blues piece in rondo form (ABACA), with a very simple syncopated 4 bar piano riff as accompaniment. The flutist can try embellishing or improvising around the set melodies. In fact sections B & C resulted from numerous improvisations over the piano accompaniment, that eventually became set melodies. Play around with the the rhythms of each phrase to give it your own feel. Experiment with the D blues scale as a basis for some further improvised work against the backing track. Chromatic runs between some notes to create a glissando effect, carefully shaped vibrato on long notes, and tapered phrase ends that don’t go flat (push lower lip slightly forward), can make this an enjoyable and challenging exercise for the flute player.

Flute solo work with piano accompaniment is mostly about the flute player learning to listen very carefully to the ensemble sound, to facilitate improvement in one’s intonation and rhythmical connection to the accompaniment, and perhaps most importantly, the dynamic and tonal balance within the ensemble effect.

The downloadable zip files for these flute solos with piano accompaniment, contain a pdf master score for the solo flute and the piano part, an individual flute solo pdf extract, an mp3 audio of the master score (flute & piano), as well as an mp3 flute solo backing track with only the piano accompaniment to assist practice.
