Traveling North

Description

Flute solo work with piano accompaniment is mostly about the flute player learning to listen very carefully to the ensemble sound, to facilitate improvement in one’s intonation and rhythmical connection with the accompaniment, and perhaps most importantly, the dynamic and tonal balance within the ensemble effect.

This contemporay piece has a rhythmical rock feel. Its origins lie in my family’s once a year July escape from the cold winter’s down south, driving north 1200 kilometres into the warmer coastal areas of Western Australia, specifically an isolated surfing spot called Red Bluff north of Carnarvon. So this is a travelling song full of motion and expectation of the holiday ahead.

Even though the set key is F major, it shifts around or modulates into several other keys along the journey (eg bar 40-41 into D major). In the beginning, the music establishes a Dorian modal G minor position within the F major framework.

Keep the tempo steady with a forward moving momentum , and be particular about the dynamics. Applying dynamics and shaping phrases well is no easy task for the flute player, who must consider many technical elements, such as articulations, breath support, ornamentations, tempo changes, vibrato and the tapering of phrase ends on the longer notes requiring the lower lip position to push forward a little to prevent any flatness in the intonation as less air is pushed – let alone playing the right note at the right time in a fast moving piece. Forceful tonguing will assist the rhythmical drive of the melodies.

The downloadable zip files for these flute solos with piano accompaniment, contain a pdf master score for the solo flute and the piano part, an individual flute solo pdf extract, an mp3 audio of the master score (flute & piano), as well as an mp3 flute solo backing track with only the piano accompaniment to assist practice.
